Co-valedictorian Steven Dumeng of La Salle Academy’s Class of 2020, addressed fellow graduates observing social distancing in their pews during the school’s 171st commencement exercises Aug. 13 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Graduation for the 74 seniors was delayed by more than two months due to the coronavirus pandemic. The alumni collectively received more than $15 million in grants and scholarships for college. Dumeng will attend Boston College and co-valedictorian Elijah Perez-Mendez is headed to Fairfield University. “I am glad we were able to provide this opportunity for our seniors. Although the timing was unprecedented, the spirit was familiar. I hope those who participated remotely via livestream felt the joy associated with participating in this rite of passage,” said Brother Thomas P. Casey, F.S.C., academy president. La Salle Academy is a boys’ college preparatory Catholic high school in Manhattan, serving students from all five boroughs.
