California’s Restrictions

Posted

More than 200,000 people in the United States have died from the Covid-19 virus. There have been more than 7 million cases of the coronavirus in the United States. I applaud the State of California for restricting gatherings to protect its people and to limit the spread of the virus. (CNY, Sept. 24).

I do not agree with Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco that the restrictions were put in place to repress basic religious freedom. The rules are strict, yes; unfairly applied, maybe. Sign petitions, demonstrate with marches but don’t blame the state for denying religious freedom. California experienced an increase in cases and large groups are one source of the spread of the virus.

A democracy depends on responsible religious and civic leaders.
