Catholic Elementary Schools in the Archdiocese of New York to Remain Closed Until Monday, April 20; Students Engaged in Home-Based Learning

Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of New York will remain closed through Monday, April 20, said Michael J. Deegan, superintendent of schools in the archdiocese.

The March 16 announcement extended school closings for archdiocesan elementary schools. In response to the coronavirus, a decision was made last week to cancel classes in the archdiocese from Monday to Friday, March 16-20.

Informed by the current CDC guidelines and in consultation with other health professionals, the Health and Safety Task Force of the Office of the Superintendent of Schools made the decision out of concern for the well-being of students, families and staff.

Mayor Bill de Blasio on March 15 announced that public schools in New York City would be closed until April 20.

Last week, principals and teachers at Catholic elementary schools in the archdiocese prepared educational materials to engage students in a week of home-based learning activities. The extended closure requires that the archdiocesan system’s professional educators, under the guidance of their regional superintendents, continue to plan for a long-term, home-based learning experience, including the same religious, values-infused curriculum taught throughout the year.

With students, families, educators and the greater community still coming to terms with all that has happened in the past few weeks, it is believed home-based learning will provide a comforting sense of normalcy to the thousands of students enrolled in the archdiocese’s Catholic elementary schools.
