Deacon Robert Esposito, who served for 25 years at St. John the Evangelist parish in Mahopac, died in The Villages, Florida. He was 80.

Deacon Esposito served at St. John the Evangelist, 1979-2004.

The deacon and his wife, Ann, served as the directors of religious education for more than 35 years at St. John the Evangelist.

He was a principal for children with special needs in school systems in New York City, Putnam and Northern Westchester counties, and later served as principal of St. John the Evangelist School, White Plains.

As a deacon, he also served at St. Mary of the Assumption parish, Katonah, 2004-2005, and at a parish in Summerfield, Fla., from 2006 until his retirement in 2016.

Cardinal Terence Cooke ordained him as a permanent deacon in 1979.

Born in the Bronx, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College, Manhattan, and a master’s from Fordham University.

His wife of 58 years, Ann; children Bernadette Cecchini, Joseph Esposito and Jude-Ann Gargiula; brother Carmine Esposito; and eight grandchildren survive him.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 15 at St. Mark the Evangelist.
