Father Edward F. Boes, S.A.

Father Edward F. Boes, S.A., who served as a rector in Rome, died Feb. 18 at St. Paul Friary at Graymoor in Garrison. He was 60.

He was rector of Sant’Onofrio al Gianicolo Church in Rome for 10 years. He also served as novice director for the friars in Assisi in his final year in Italy. He returned to Graymoor in December because of illness.

He served as novice director at St. Francis Novitiate at Graymoor, 2000-2005; and as a parochial vicar of St. Joseph the Worker parish in Vancouver, B.C., 1996-2000. He ministered at St. Joseph Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center in Saranac Lake in 2005 before returning to Graymoor later that year.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1992 and made final vows in 1997. He was ordained in 1998. He held a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Cathedral College in Douglaston, Queens; a master’s in theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington; and a master of divinity from Washington Theological Union in Washington, D.C.

His father, Edward F. Boes Sr.; mother, Violet Boes; and sister, Susan Cassese, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 27 in St. Anthony Chapel of St. Paul Friary at Graymoor. Burial was in the friars’ cemetery.
