Father Raymond Bagdonis, O. Carm.

Father Raymond Bagdonis, O. Carm., who served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Middletown for 11 years, died Oct. 30 after a lengthy illness. He was 70.

Father Bagdonis was parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 2009-2012 and 1994-2002. He was parochial vicar of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Bloomingburg, 2002-2008.

He cared for the elderly at St. Albert’s Priory, Middletown, and served as manager of the Carmelite Gift Store and as an assistant at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middletown, 1991-1994. He was deacon and pastoral associate at Our Lady of the Scapular-St. Stephen’s parish, Manhattan, 1988-1991. He also served in upstate Troy and Florida.

Born in Fort Bragg, N.C., he entered the Carmelites in 1979, professed final vows in 1987 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1994.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies and philosophy from Iona College, New Rochelle, and a master’s in theological studies from Washington Theological Union, Washington, D.C.
His brother, Simon, survives him.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 5 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Burial was in Carmelite Cemetery, Middletown.
