Father Richard B. Callahan, M.M.

Father Richard B. Callahan, M.M., who served in Central America and in the United States, died Jan. 22 in the Assisted Living Center at Maryknoll in Ossining. He was 83.

Father Callahan was assigned to Maryknoll's Central America Mission Region for three years ending in 1979.

He spent almost his entire mission career in the United States, serving in administrative capacities at Maryknoll in Ossining, and in St. Louis, Chicago, Philadelphia and Milwaukee. His assignments included service as chief financial officer, director of the development department and assistant to the U.S. Regional Superior. Father Callahan was a chapter delegate from the U.S. Region to the Ninth and 11th General Chapters.

Born in Pittsburgh, he received a master's degree in education from Maryknoll Seminary, where he completed his studies for the priesthood, and was ordained for the Maryknoll Fathers in 1964.

He also held a master's degree in business administration from Manhattan College.

Knowledgeable in horticulture, he compiled a directory and inventory of all the tree species on the Maryknoll property.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 26 at Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll. Father Callahan's cremains were placed in the Maryknoll Columbarium.
