Father Richard T. Ouellette, M.M., who served in South America for 22 years, died Feb. 20 in the assisted living center at Maryknoll in Ossining. He was 88.

Father Ouellette was in Brazil, 1975-1985 and Peru, 1963-1975, before serving as executive secretary to the general council in the United States, 1985-1987. He was also in Washington and California, Bangladesh and Rome.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., he served in the U.S. Navy before entering Maryknoll in 1955. He professed final vows in 1962 and was ordained in 1963.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Maryknoll College in Glen Ellyn, Ill. and a master’s in theology at Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining.

His sister, Rachel Mitchell, survives him.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 27 in Queen of Apostles Chapel at the Maryknoll Society Center. Burial followed in the Maryknoll cemetery in Ossining.
