Iona Men, Fordham Women Reach NCAA Tournament

The Iona College men’s and Fordham University women’s basketball teams will learn soon who they’ll play in the NCAA tournament after earning automatic bids by winning their respective conference tournaments.

The selection show for the men’s tournament is Sunday night, and the women’s selection show is Monday night.

Iona (17-15 overall) became the first team to win four consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championships by beating Monmouth University, 81-60, in Albany March 11.

Asante Gist scored 22 points, and Tajuan Agee added 18 points for the Gaels, who enter the NCAA tournament with 10 straight wins. Ben Perez and tournament most valuable player Rickey McGill had 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Fordham (25-8) won its 12th consecutive game when it defeated Virginia Commonwealth University, 62-47, for the Atlantic 10 title in Pittsburgh March 10.

Mary Goulding finished with 19 points and four steals, and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player for the Rams, who will be competing in the program’s third NCAA tournament. Bre Cavanaugh scored a game-high 22 points, earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
