La Religión Secular y Los Sacrificios Humanos

Posted

Secular Religion and Human Sacrifices

By FATHER LORENZO ATO

By "secular religion," we understand certain forms of behavior (including a system of beliefs, ideas and social practices) that externally adopt some similarities with religious practices, although they are frequently openly contrary to the spirit of religion. Those who practice "secular" or "secularist" religion (identifying themselves as "non-believers" or agnostics) are often intolerant of those who profess any religion. "Secular religion" builds its own idols, its dogmas, to fill the void of the religious.

Religion, on the other hand, being a human phenomenon, is subject to degradation or deformation, without disqualifying it or making it immoral. It is necessary to distinguish between a "religious experience" and an "ethical experience." Religion presupposes an ethic, but does not identify with it. Ethics does not necessarily lead to a religious experience. Throughout history we find numerous examples of "religious people" with a questionable "ethical experience"; the explanation of this phenomenon cannot be reduced to a pharisaical or hypocritical attitude of those who claim to live a religious experience. What is desirable, without a doubt, is that there is no dichotomy between religious faith, spirituality and ethical living.

With respect to human sacrifices, practiced in some religions of the past, it should be noted that this responds to a certain assessment or conception of what is considered good or bad. Human sacrifices were practiced in various cultures (in ancient Europe, pre-Hispanic America, Africa, Asia). They were done for various reasons, mainly as an offering to the gods to appease their anger or to obtain their favors. Many of those who offered their own children as a sacrifice to gods or idols did so with "faith," with the mistaken belief that they were doing the right thing. In the name of religion, in the past, many actions have been committed that today we consider as barbarous, totally contrary to ethics.

The religions that have practiced human sacrifices have not done so for perverse reasons. Without pretending to justify this type of aberrant practice, it must be said, however, that these religions presuppose that the supreme value is not human life in its earthly dimension; the supreme value is God. For that reason, they are capable of sacrificing a human life when it is believed that it is necessary for the divinity. We are facing the recognition of God as the supreme value. God is placed above the distinction between good and evil; beyond morals. On the other hand, it is, without a doubt, a fatal misunderstanding of the divine will, a distortion of religion.

In the Bible, we find an explicit condemnation of the practice of human sacrifice (Cf., Lv 20, 1-5). The Israelites were tempted to imitate the Canaanites by sacrificing their first-born, succumbing in some cases (Cf., 2Re 3, 27; Ez 20, 25ss; Jr 7, 30ss; 19, 5; 32, 35; Mi 6 , 6). Abraham's truncated sacrifice of his own son (Cf., Gen 22, 1-14) must be read not only as an act of "total obedience to God" in which the faith of Abraham is tested, but also as a form of condemnation of the human sacrifices that were common among the neighboring peoples of Israel at that time. It must be understood as a prohibition by God of the offering of sacrifices of the first-born (a custom rooted in some pagan peoples). The God of Israel cannot want to be offered human sacrifices.

From the so-called contemporary western civilization, the practice of the human sacrifices mentioned above, appear as aberrant acts, fruits of ignorance of the past. However, as Pope Francis has pointed out, we are currently witnessing a massive practice of human sacrifice, made in the name of freedom. Pope Francis, in an audience granted to the seminarians of Lombardy (Italy) on Oct. 16, 2018 (an audience held in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican), referring to the current secularization, tells us that the theme of secularization is not an exclusively modern matter. Both in the past and in the present, there has been secularization; what changes is the way in which this phenomenon is expressed. In the time of Jesus, the Pope points out, there was also secularism, "at that time human sacrifices were also made ...and today, too. In other ways, and with white gloves, but they are made" (Audience to the seminarians of Lombardy). The Pope makes a direct reference to the issue of abortion in our time, which he considers as a modern way of offering "human sacrifices."

Today, as Pope Francis points out, human sacrifices are still practiced, not for religious reasons but for evil, satanic reasons. No rationality can justify depriving of life the unborn, who happen to be the most defenseless. A society that does not defend life irremediably walks to its own self-destruction. It is pathetic that there are doctors who, instead of defending life, destroy it; they act as "hit men" (hired to kill). It is pathetic that abortion is considered as "a right" of women, as a great achievement for democracy. Pope Francis has pointed out that those who resort to "abortion" are like hiring an assassin (in this case the doctor or anyone who practices it). In fact, although the Pope's expressions sound very hard, they are still true. There is, rationally speaking, nothing to justify the elimination of a human life in the womb. Statistics show that the number of human lives eliminated by abortion is greater than the number of victims produced in the greatest genocides of the past. Millions of innocent lives are sacrificed with the patronage of the states that promote it. The so-called "voluntary termination of pregnancy" is no more than a euphemism for hiding the true nature of a horrendous crime carried out with treachery. The states that promote abortion invest more resources in campaigns to facilitate free access to abortion for women and scarce resources in promoting the health of pregnant mothers.

Those who in the past offered human sacrifices, moved by religious motivations (with invincibly wrong conscience), cannot be put on the same moral level as the defenders of a "secular religion" who currently defend and practice human sacrifices (abortions). The current barbarism is greater. It is totally paradoxical that laws are issued to protect the life of animals, but they do not have the same sensitivity to protect human life in the more defenseless, namely the unborn. It is totally irrational that in many countries there is deprivation of liberty for those who mistreat animals, but that it is not illegal to kill a human being in the womb, and even more so that such act of barbarism is required by the mother herself with the cooperation of a "hit man" who acts in the name of the law. Can this be called civilization? Within that "logic," the defenders of the unborn human life would have to fight so laws are approved that recognize the same "rights" for the embryos and human fetuses that the protected animals have.
