Moran Brothers Share Historic Major League Moment

Iona Preparatory School graduates Brian and Colin Moran shared a historic moment.

When Brian pitched to his younger brother Colin Sept. 3, it was the first time brothers met in a pitcher-batter match-up, with one brother making his Major League debut since 1900, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly called Brian out of the bullpen to start the bottom of the fourth inning against the host Pittsburgh Pirates. Colin was the second hitter and worked the count to three balls and one strike before Brian struck out Colin for his first career strikeout.

Brian retired all three hitters he faced to earn his first major league win.

Brian, 30, was called up by the Marlins Sept. 3 after going 2-3 with a 3.15 ERA for New Orleans, the Marlins’ Class AAA affiliate in the Pacific Coast League. In 60 innings, he struck out 77.

Brian was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the seventh round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft and played in the Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians organizations before signing with the Marlins in December.

Colin, a former first-round pick of the Marlins before being dealt to the Houston Astros and Pirates, was hitting .284 with 13 home runs and 77 RBI through Sept. 7.

Brian and Colin both played at the University of North Carolina and are nephews of former major leaguers Rick and B.J. Surhoff.
