Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh will sponsor a presentation on “Lives of Service and Joy: An Oral History of the Dominican Sisters of Hope,” Thursday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m. The talk by James Phillips, an associate professor of theatre at the college, will kick off this semester’s Investigating Research on Campus (iROC) series.
The talk will be held in the Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center at Mount St. Mary, 330 Powell Ave. It will be free and open to the public. Organizers note that Mount St. Mary College owes much to the vision and hard work of the Dominican Sisters.
St. Dominic, a Spanish priest, established the first community of the Order of Preachers, or the Dominican Order, in the 13th century in France. Following in his footsteps, the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh founded Mount St. Mary College in 1959, using the four pillars of Dominican life—study, prayer, service and community—as a guide.
The Dominican Sisters of Hope were formed by the 1995 merger of three Dominican congregations, including the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh.
Phillips’ talk will discuss the history of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, their impact on the Mount and an upcoming theatre project in their honor. The sisters approved a project in which the members of the order are interviewed about why they entered the religious congregation, what each member has accomplished during her assignments and how each has benefited from life as a Dominican Sister of Hope. The project will culminate with a student performance using a script adapted from the interview transcripts.
The goal of the iROC series is to allow Mount faculty, staff and students to showcase their research in a way that can be easily understood by the college and local community.
