Sister Brigid Driscoll, R.S.H.M., who served as president of Marymount College in Tarrytown for 20 years, died Oct. 29 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. She was 84.
Sister Brigid was Marymount president, 1979-1999. She also served at Marymount, 1957-1964 and 1967-1979, in roles such as teacher, associate academic dean and director of continuing education. She introduced Weekend College at Marymount in 1975, one of the nation’s first to offer adults, working full time during the week, to pursue a bachelor’s degree exclusively through weekend classes.
Sister Brigid served on the R.S.H.M. (Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary) Eastern American Province Executive Board, represented the R.S.H.M. NGO at the United Nations, worked with the anti-trafficking network of LifeWay, and taught math through the Marymount Manhattan College degree program at Bedford Women’s Correctional Facility, Bedford Hills.
Sister Brigid served on the boards of Marymount Manhattan College, Manhattan; Marymount University, Arlington, Va.; St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Ind.; and Marymount School of New York City. She also served on boards for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, New York State Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities, Council of Independent Colleges, Westchester Education Coalition, and Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, where she was a representative to the consultation in Rome on the Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities.
Gov. George Pataki named Sister Brigid a consultant to the Beacon Institute in 2000.
Born in New York City, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marymount in 1954 and professed final vows in 1961.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Marymount Manhattan College, Manhattan; a master’s in mathematics from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; and a doctorate in mathematics from The City University of New York, Manhattan. She received five honorary doctorates.
A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 3 at Marymount Convent. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
