Sister Carolyn Roesel, R.S.H.M.

Sister Carolyn Roesel, R.S.H.M., who served as an educator in Tarrytown, New Jersey and Virginia, died Oct. 4 at Westchester Medical Center in White Plains. She was 96.

She served at Marymount School, Tarrytown, as principal, 1968-1975; librarian, 1947-1948; and superior of school community, 1965-1968. She also served in the library at Marymount College, Tarrytown, 1948-1965. She taught at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Manhattan, 1946-1947.

From the 1970s to the mid-1990s, she was a curriculum director in Princeton, N.J.

Born in Sagaponack, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1944 and made final vows in 1951. She held a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Marymount College, and a master’s in library science from Columbia University. She was formerly known as Sister De Lourdes.

She is survived by her sister, Catherine Roesel Bishop.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 9 at Marymount Convent, where she resided. Burial was at Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
