Sister Dorothy McGowan, M.M., who served in East Timor for 24 years, died Jan. 13 at Maryknoll Sisters Center, Ossining. She was 86.

Sister Dorothy was in East Timor, 1991-2015, where she did pastoral work, was a high school teacher and was coordinator of the Family Life Program. She also served at Maryknoll, and in the Philippines and Indonesia.

Born in New York City, she graduated from St. Barnabas High School in the Bronx. She entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1952 and professed final vows in 1961.

She earned a master’s degree in math from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

Her brother, Kenneth, survives her.

Her Funeral Mass was livestreamed Jan. 22 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Her remains were interred in the Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery, Ossining.
