Sister Jane McDermott, O.P., who served at Dominican College in Orangeburg for 19 years, died Nov. 27 in St. Martin de Porres Community at the Motherhouse in Blauvelt. She was 78.

She was at Dominican College as an instructor, 2011-2015, 1995-2005 and 1990-1994, and as acting director of teacher education, 1994-1995. She taught at St. Martin de Porres School, Poughkeepsie, 1972-1981; Holy Rosary, Yonkers, 1970-1972; Our Savior, the Bronx, 1969-1970; and St. Catharine’s, Blauvelt, 1963-1968.

She was secretary general of the congregation, 2005-2011, and also served in New Jersey.

Born in Yonkers, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt in 1960 and professed final vows in 1968. She was formerly known as Sister Michael Joseph.

She earned a master’s degree in education from SUNY New Paltz and a bachelor’s in education from Dominican College.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 30 at St. Dominic’s Convent Chapel, Blauvelt. Burial was at St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery.
