Sister Jean Mary Michalec, M.M., a missioner to Japan for 45 years, died Oct. 1 at Maryknoll Sisters Center, Ossining. She was 79.

Sister Jean Mary served in Japan, 1986-2014 and 1966-1973. She taught biology and chemistry at Sophia University, Tokyo, 1986-2004 and 1973-1983.

She was director of the orientation team in the admissions office at Maryknoll, 1983-1986.

Born in New Westminster, British Columbia, she entered the novitiate of the Maryknoll Sisters in 1962 and professed final vows in 1971.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and a master’s and doctorate, both from Sophia University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 19 at Annunciation Chapel at Maryknoll. Burial was in the sisters cemetery.
