Sister Josephine Nolan, O.C.D., of the Carmelite Monastery in Beacon, died April 22 at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, Newburgh. She was 87.

Born in Banagher, County Offaly, Ireland, she grew up in the Bronx and was a graduate of the Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing. She worked for a number of years as a nurse before entering the Carmelites in the Bronx in 1954. Taking the religious name Sister Josephine of the Incarnation, she spent much of her ministry caring for the well-being of the sisters.

She was prioress of the Bronx community for several years and was active in the formation of the Metropolitan Association of Contemplative Communities.

A Funeral Mass was offered April 26 at the Beacon monastery, with burial in Ascension Cemetery, Airmont.
