Sister Margaret Rooney, M.M., who was a nurse and catechist in missions in the United States, Mexico and Guatemala, died June 12 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center Residential Care unit in Ossining. She was 96.

She began her ministry by serving in many of the early Maryknoll Sisters missions in the United States, including those in Seattle, Houston, Albuquerque and San Francisco.

She would later serve as a missioner to Guatemala and finally in Mexico, where she was a pastoral minister in Oaxaca.

From 1975 to 1984, she was a nurse at the Maryknoll Sisters Center and Nursing Facility in Bethany, where she cared for sick and elderly sisters.

Born in County Leitrim, Ireland, she entered the Maryknoll Sisters from Montreal, Canada, in 1937 and professed final vows in 1943. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Anne Therese.

A Funeral Mass was offered June 17 at the Maryknoll Sisters Chapel in Ossining, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery.
