Sister Mary Anne Duva, P.B.V.M., who taught at several schools in the archdiocese, died Oct. 7 at Sapphire Nursing Home in Newburgh. She was 89.

Sister Mary Anne taught at Mount St. Joseph Academy and Presentation Junior College, both New Windsor; SS. John and Mary School, Chappaqua; and John S. Burke Catholic High School, Goshen. She was a teacher in New York from 1952 to 1976, except for two years in the 1950s. 

She served as an educator and in the Ministry Secretariat in the Diocese of Paterson, N.J., from 1976 until her retirement in 2005.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1949 and made final vows in 1955. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Claver. She held a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University and a master’s in philosophy from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Poli, and nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 10 at St. Marianne Cope Church, Cornwall. Burial was at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, New Windsor.
