Sister Mary O’Neill, P.B.V.M., who taught for 15 years at Our Lady of Solace School in the Bronx, died May 23 at home in New Windsor. She was 88.

Sister Mary was at Our Lady of Solace, 1979-1982 and 1953-1965. She taught at St. Paul the Apostle, Yonkers, 1976-1978, and St. John’s, Goshen, 1965-1969 and 1953.

Following her teaching career, Sister Mary worked in direct service to the poor at Newburgh Ministry, Newburgh, 2003-2018. From 1984 to 2003, she worked for Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties, and Maryhouse, Marlboro, and served as pastoral minister of St. Mary’s parish, Marlboro.

Born in Long Island City, she graduated from St. Michael’s Academy in Manhattan. She entered the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1950 and professed final vows in 1956.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University, the Bronx.

Her sister, Kathryn Araneo, survives her.

Burial was May 27 in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, New Windsor. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date.
