R.J. Davis has added another postseason honor for the 2019-2020 season. The Archbishop Stepinac High School senior was named the 2019-2020 Class AA Co-Player of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Davis was one of 19 Catholic high school athletes from the archdiocese to be recognized by the state’s sportswriters.
He averaged 26.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game in leading Stepinac to the archdiocesan championship.
In 2019-2020, Davis was named Mr. New York State Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Gatorade New York State Boys Basketball Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All-American, earning him the opportunity to play in the 43rd McDonald’s All-American Game in Houston that was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Davis will play at the University of North Carolina next season.
He was joined on the Class AA all-state list by St. Raymond senior Luis Kortright, first team; Cardinal Hayes senior Julien Soumaoro, second team; St. Peter’s senior Liam Murphy, third team; Stepinac junior Adrian Griffin Jr., fourth team; Msgr. Scanlan senior Koby Brea, fourth team; Cardinal Hayes senior Shemani Fuller, seventh team; Mount St. Michael senior Ibrahim Wattara, eighth team; Stepinac junior Malcolm Chimezie, ninth team; Msgr. Scanlan senior Joseph Munden, ninth team; Iona Prep senior Keeshawn Jones, 11th team; and Mount St. Michael sophomore Tyler Hawkins, 13th team.
In Class A, Msgr. Farrell junior Justin Zieris was a third teamer. Albertus Magnus senior Jarron Joseph, sixth team; Xavier junior Blair Thompson, 10th team; and Fordham Prep junior Ryan McPartian, 14th team, also were all-state honorees.
In Class B, Salesian junior Camar Neil and Regis senior Joe Manfredi earned spots on the fifth team. Salesian senior Brayson Reyes made the 13th team.
